You Pick the Madden Cursed Player!
EA Sports and Doritos have teamed up to allow fans of the NFL Madden series to vote for who should be on the cover of this year’s Madden 11 (August). Basically, EA is tired of taking the blame for cursing players and wants it to be your fault by taking the “Hey, we didn’t pick him – you did!” approach.
Throughout the history of featuring a top player on the cover (since 1999), most of the players that have either suffered injuries or had horrible seasons.
Let’s review some of them:
2002 Daunte Culpepper – Threw 23 interceptions and broke the single season fumble record…congrats!
2003 Marshall Faulk – Health and production severely declined. Leading to re-constructive knee surgery and his inevitable retirement from the game a couple of years later.
2004 Michael Vick – Broke his leg in a pre-season game, which obviously made him miss the whole season. (Atlanta won 5 games that year) This might have also been around the time he started his k-9 fight club.
2006 Donovan McNabb – When he wasn’t out with a back injury, he sucked ass.
2007 Shaun Alexander – The league MVP the year prior, he sustained a foot injury which caused him to miss 6 games and inevitably never returned to his normal self.
2008 Vince Young – Replaced by backup quarterback Kerry Collins and then the whole situation in which his family had him on suicide watch.
2009 Brett Favre – Jets.
2010 Troy Polamalu and Larry Fitzgerald – The first dual player cover that featured players from the previous year’s Super Bowl hoped to break the curse – no such luck. Polamalu sprained his MCL and missed 4 games at the beginning of the season came back for 3 games and injured his PCL, causing him to miss more games. Steelers didn’t make the playoffs. Fitz on the other hand had an ok season other than pulling out of the Pro Bowl due to a knee injury.
So, this year the targets are on Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen, Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne.
Fans won’t be voting for their favorite player, but for someone other than their favorite, or the team they like the least. I voted for Wayne.
